When you’re out in the great outdoors, having a pocket knife isn’t always necessary, but they can definitely come in handy at times. I’ve recently been testing out the Buck Knives Flashpoint knife over the past few months to see how it performs in various settings including camping, hiking, and everyday use.
When I look at a knife, I like to make sure that it not only has a sharp blade, but I like to have a knife that is safe, feels good in the hand, and has features that live up to the packaging and marketing hype. The fit of the Buck Knives Flashpoint in the hand is comfortable and fitting. I have a larger hand so most knifes fit in my hand, but to make sure it fits in smaller hands, I also had one of our female testers with small hands check out the fit and she thought it felt good. One of the nice features of the Flashpoint is that it can be used with only one hand to open and close.
To open the knife outside of the handle casing, you have to move the safety switch with your thumb and use your index finger to open the knife up. For whatever reason, I am often challenged with opening up one handed knives and I found this knife to be super easy to open. What helps challenged knife openers like myself is the ridged end of the blade where you put your finger to open the knife. The small ridges allow the finger to get a good grip with the blade opener. This is hard to explain, so be sure to look at the picture.
For the outdoors man or woman that likes to keep the knife close to the hip, there is a clip where you can connect the knife to a pocket or belt. If you want to secure it to your pack or other objects with secured loops, there is a carabineer that you can clip the knife onto. As an added bonus, the carabineer clip doubles as a bottle opener as well.
As far as the blade goes, it is made out of 420 HC Steel. The section of the blade closest to the hand is serrated. In this section of the blade, the grooves in this part of the blade open up to favor the use with your right hand. The casing is made out of anodized aluminum for a good weight to strength ratio.
