For the hiker, backpacker, or car camper that is looking for an easy to use and reliable pocket knife, the Gerber Instant is a great option. The Gerber Instant has a 3.18 ” Steel blade that is the perfect length for your standard pocket knife.
When hiking and camping, I like to carry a knife or multi-tool along with me for utility use and protection. A key-chain style of knife is too small for me and I have to admit, I don’t need a monster blade that looks cool and dangerous, but is a pain in the but to carry around. I usually use a pocket knife to cut a rope, widdle a stick, do a little digging, cut up some food, etc., but nothing too major like cutting up an animal carcass. I also like to have a little bit of a blade in case I run into a mountain lion or other attacking animal where the blade could do enough damage to keep them from destroying me. The blade on the Gerber Instant is curved and fine with about an inch of serrated blade near the handle to give you the best of both worlds.
To deploy the knife, there is a thumb knob to help open the knife. From time to time, I sometimes have trouble opening the knife with this knob, but for one reason or another, I have always had trouble with these types of knobs. Also, to help open the knife the Gerber Instant comes with assisted opening which helps the knife open nice and fast. For little or big kids, this could be dangerous, so be careful who you let use the knife. When the knife is opened, it is locked into place. There is a silver button where you can use your thumb to push down and use your index finger to close the knife making it easy to use with one hand.
The handle of the knife is made of G-10 composite which is super light and durable. The handle on the Gerber Instant is textured, so it is easy to hold on to and it also helps prevent the knife from slipping out of your hand. If you like to keep your knife clipped into your pocket, there is a pocket clip to keep the knife secure on your belt or in your pocket.
Overall, I found the Gerber Instant Knife to be a great knife for everyday use as well as taking on my outdoor adventures. For more info on the Instant Knife and other Gerber Tools, visit www.gerbergear.com or www.amazon.com/gerber.
